Characteristics of a Fundable Idea

This KnowledgeBase archive includes content and external links that were accurate and relevant as of September 30, 2019.

While every idea may seem worthwhile to pursue, not all ideas will be fundable. When formulating its project idea the grant seeker must be aware of the funding agency's perspective if a governmental grant and philosophical foundation if a private grant source. It is imperative that the project idea be in-sync with the funding source's perspective.

The grant seeker's project idea should possess the following characteristics.
    •    The idea is new and innovative based on sound research and pedagogy.
    •    The endeavor has the potential of being cost-effective.
    •    Local funds will be available to continue the endeavor when external funding ends. Explanations of how in-kind services are being used is especially helpful.
    •    A clear need for the endeavor can be documented.
    •    The idea is timely. Hot topics in education are literacy and numeracy.

Project ideas with these characteristics will successfully meet the four cornerstone test of a winning grant.
