Discussion Guide - Review the Plan with the Superintendent

Prior to finalizing the school improvement plan, the principal should schedule time with the district superintendent and/or his or her designee to review the plan. The purposes for the discussion should be to:

    •    gain the benefit of the superintendent's insights and tacit experience,
    •    keep the superintendent informed about the improvement efforts at the district's schools, and
    •    lay the groundwork for the superintendent's support in allocating limited resources among the schools within the district.

With the above purposes in mind, the conversation should at least focus on the following topics:

    •    Discussing the reason for the school's improvement status
    •    Reviewing the plan's measurable objectives
    •    Reviewing the timeline for accomplishing the plan's objectives
    •    Reviewing the technical assistance required from the district and state department of education to accomplish the objectives
    •    Discussing the financial resources required to accomplish the objectives
    •    Reviewing the principal's plan for monitoring the plan's implementation

Through this dialog, the principal may gain useful information and insights that may be appropriate to include in the plan and/or use over time as the principal works to implement it.
